The co-founder of Alpagu logistic Ali Erdim has stated the container problems and its solutions processes. Erdim has given important information about logistics sector that is the key point of many sectors.
“PANDEMIC ENSURED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LOGISTICS”
Ali Erdim, who said that the pandemic has brought us new habits, stated “The logistic sector that always existing have become more popular”. In this period, we understood the importance of logistic sector due to the vaccines. For example, at first days of pandemic, we carried out wholesale transportations contrary to our ordinary transportations. As a result, we saw all empty market shelfs. The reason of this waiting is not because of inventory stockouts. The whole world just was not ready to meet this need. In the first days of Covid-19 pandemic, the panic on people caused this sale operations. Under these conditions, sea freight has been affected dramatically, as well. Erdim stated as.
“EMPTY CONTAINER PROBLEM IS USED AS A STRATEGIC POWER”
Referring to the business magazines, we faced a hard period in terms of container stocking all over the world. Erdim attached that from the last quarter of 2020 to now, the empty containers which caused crisis and the supplying them gets harder have been used as a strategic power between countries. While China collects empty containers, U.S.A postulates to receive goods from them. Also, China’s persistence on the collecting empty containers aggravated this situation, said Ali Erdim.
“LET’S SEND ALL EMPTY CONTAINER TO CHINA”
The co-founder of Alpagu logistic stated some solutions about empty container problem which is a great problem in this year for logistic sector. Erdim said “while Ro-Ro and bulk transportation may be solution in short term, a strong fleet and encouragements to produce new containers may be the solution in long term. The world’s biggest container importer U.S.A did not allow to ship empty containers and this caused quotas and hardships. Before the pandemic, we understood that no shipowner wants to ship empty containers. Shipowners used to want to ship empty containers even if they are worthless to get rid of harbour expenses. When China and U.S.A freights reached 8000-14000 dollars, no shipowner cared about the harbour expenses which is 50-100 dollars only. This caused a perception between shipowners: “SEND ALL THE CONTAINERS TO CHINA”. This caused equipment problems in medium-scaled countries and also it caused huge rises on prices, Said Erdim.
“YOUTH EMPOLOYMENT IS IMPORTANT”
Erdim said “when expanding in logistics sector is directed properly, this sector may be an employment area for youth.
He attached “In this hard period, with the benefits of our board member Mehmet Pala and his staff, we continued to expand and we employed unexperienced youth to contribute to the economy of the country.
TURKEY’S 3RD BIGGEST AND RENOVATED HARBOR
Erdim, who said that Izmir is located in a strategic spot in terms of being a center of trade, stated “Aliağa harbour, Turkey’s 3rd biggest and renovated harbour, should be considered to make Izmir the center of containers. When we consider the handling rates in Izmir and Aliağa harbour, we can see the investments of transactors of Marmara region. The big investments in Aliağa harbour, such as APM harbour and Socar company shows the potential of this area.
LOGISTIC AFFECTS ALL SECTORS
Explaining logistics sector only as a container would be a big mistake. We all buy things, such as clothing and technology both international and intranational. We should always remember that every employee that works for logistic companies has effort on the products we buy, said Erdim.
